How do I separate students by Groups in a combined section of a D2L course?

To separate students in a D2L course site when two sections of the course have been combined, you will first need to obtain a list of the course sections and the students enrolled each one.

Then, you’ll need to create a group for each section in D2L and enroll the appropriate students in it. Follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Groups tool in the combined course site.
  2. Select New Category.
  3. Enter a name in the “Category Name” field (e.g., Course Sections).
  4. Select # of Groups – No Auto Enrollments from “Enrollment Type” drop-down menu.
  5. Enter the number of course sections that have been combined in the course site in the “Number of Groups” field.
  6. Select Save.
  7. Select the category name you entered for step 5 from the “View Categories” drop-down menu options. (You can skip this step if you only have one set of groups in your course.)
  8. Select Group 1.
  9. Change “Group Name” to one of the course sections.
  10. Rename the “Group Code” text so that it’s the same as the “Group Name” text.
  11. Select Save.
  12. Make the same changes to Group 2, following steps 8-11.
  13. Select the dropdown arrow next to the category name you typed in step 5 (i.e., Course Sections), then select Enroll Users.
  14. Select the box to the right of each student’s name to enroll them in the appropriate group.
  15. Select Save.

NOTE: If any students are added to your course after you set up these groups, you will need to enroll them into their appropriate groups.
