This is a question instructors ask frequently, and there could be a few different reasons why it occurs. This can include not being able to see scores on a quiz, feedback an instructor has entered for individual quiz questions, or both. Here are some things to check when this issue comes up.
Students Cannot See Quiz Scores
Usually this happens when quiz scores haven’t been published. When setting up quizzes, if you select the following options, students will be able to view their scores as soon as they submit the quiz: “Allow attempt to be set as graded immediately upon completion” and “Allow automatic export to grades.” Both of these settings are available in your quiz’s Assessment settings.
When these settings are selected, students will be able to view their scores as soon as they submit the quiz.
Please note that if you have written response questions in your quiz, and these settings are in place, students will receive a zero score until you manually grade them. So, their overall quiz score will initially look very low. Once you provide students with scores for these questions, and save those grades, the new overall quiz grades will be updated in Quizzes and in Grades.
Also, be aware that if you select these settings after you have graded a quiz, students’ scores don’t automatically post to the Grades area. You will need to un-publish then re-publish the scores before they’ll transfer. (See the next section for information on this.)
Manually Publish Quiz Scores
To publish quiz scores, follow the following steps:
- Navigate to Quizzes.
- Locate the appropriate quiz in the list, and click the small arrow to the right of the quiz’s title.
- Select Grade.
- Click the icon to the right of the “Published” column heading. This will select all of the boxes in the “Published” column (each one corresponds with a student’s quiz attempt).
- Click the Save (or Save and Close) button at the bottom of the page. Now all quiz scores will be published, and students will be able to see their grades when they view the quiz again.
NOTE: If you need to un-publish and republish quiz attempts (i.e., if you select automatic grade and export settings after students have begun taking the quiz), then you will repeat the process above twice; the first time, in step #4, you will be de-selecting all quiz attempts and this will un-publish them. Then, you will repeat the process, and in step #4, you will be selecting all attempts and this will publish them.
Students Cannot See Feedback on Individual Questions
This can include feedback you enter on individual questions or the correct answer for automatically graded questions, i.e., multiple choice, true/false, etc. In this case, you have to make sure that you’ve opted to show question answers in the quiz’s submission view settings. Generally we recommend that you add an additional view for this that is available either after the quiz’s end date or after you have finished manually grading it.
If you’ve selected this setting but students are saying that they aren’t seeing your feedback, it’s usually because they don’t know how to find it. Here are instructions to share with them:
- Choose Quizzes from the navigation bar.
- Click on the name of the quiz for which you would like to see question answers and feedback.
- At the top of the screen you will see “Summary – [Name of Quiz].” Click on the small arrow to the right of this header.
- Select Submissions from the drop down menu.
- Select Attempt 1 (or the appropriate attempt number).
- You will be able to review your answers to the questions, and can see your instructor’s feedback for each question by clicking View Feedback.
